Romanoff: I'll Fight for Net Neutrality Senate Candidate Stands Up for Consumers

U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff released the following statement on today's "net neutrality" ruling by a federal appeals court:

Today’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia inComcast v. FCC hurts consumers – especially those in rural and other underserved areas.  When I am in the U.S. Senate, I will fight to protect consumers, promote competition and preserve Internet neutrality.

The Federal Communications Commission needs the authority to ensure equal treatment for Internet traffic. This decision strips the FCC of that authority and invites Internet service providers to engage in discrimination – or, worse, outright censorship. The court’s ruling also imperils the commission’s ability to bring broadband access to rural Americans.

Congress and the FCC should work to secure fast and affordable access to an open Internet. Doing so will empower consumers, encourage innovation and enhance economic growth.

Without stronger protections in place, the fundamentally democratic nature of the Internet could disappear. Small businesses, innovators, citizen journalists, telecommuters and other online consumers stand to suffer.

Consumers deserve a champion in the U.S. Senate. As the only candidate in this race who refuses to accept contributions from corporate interest groups, that’s exactly the kind of senator I will be.

Full disclosure: I am currently an advisor to the Romanoff campaign
